BOTW Presents: Kirin J Callinan | Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen

TUE 26TH SEP Kirin J Callinan http://www.birdonthewire.net/events/kirinjcallinan-hoxtonsquarebarandkitchen After his stupendous support slot at one of Mac DeMarco\'s Brixton Academy show in May and a majestic headline show at Sebright Arms in June, we welcome back Kirin J Callinan with wide arms. Having spent the past few years as something of a journeyman, it comes as no surprise that Kirin\'s second album, \'Bravado\', is a creation with few boundaries. What does come as a surprise, even for those who have come to expect the unexpected from Kirin, is the stylistic direction undertaken on \'Bravado\'. With his 2013 debut album \'Embracism\', Kirin emerged as a firebrand guitarist, pushing the instrument\'s capabilities to logical extremes. On \'Bravado\', industrial macho menace has been relegated to the side-lines. In its place? Unabashed EDM euphoria. Slow-burning adoration garnered by \'Embracism\' fuelled something of a multi-year voyage for Kirin J Callinan. Like all good adventures, \'Bravado\' isn\'t so much about the setting, but the people met along the way. https://kirinjcallinan.bandcamp.com/ Doors 8pm Tickets 11 +bf adv. available from http://birdonthewire.seetickets.com/go/kirinjcallinanhoxtonsquarebarandkitchen Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen 2-4 Hoxton Square, London, N1 6NU http://www.hoxtonsquarebar.com/

Tom Grennan

Please note, this event is 14+ (Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult) The first thing Tom Grennan wrote was Old Songs, which has a cheeky, Jamie T-esque charm to its syncopated storytelling. But it was Something In The Water, the title track from his debut EP, that really showcased Grennans gritty, soulful vocals. After a scat-like, staccato verse, it gradually builds up to something rapturous: I can see the light now, as I\'m stepping out the door / Well there\'s something in the water, calling my name. The song, he says, was like coming out of the dark. I felt sorry for myself for a minute, but Ive got to just pick myself up. With Something In The Waters success, the ball was well and truly rolling. Next came a Chase & Status collaboration, All Goes Wrong, which might never have seen the light of day were it not for Grennans sheer force of will. After a fruitful writing session, the electronic duo were unsure whether or not to release the resulting song. Grennan, with the unabashed self-belief only a 21-year-old could have, told them, Boys, this is a banger. He was right, and a spot on the BBCs Sound of 2017 longlist shortly followed. Now, theres no stopping him. Please note, you may be required to have your ID scanned at the front door.

Parallel Lines Presents Wyldest + Emmy & Pelicandy

Wyldest will be playing at The Waiting Room on the 27th September. The London trio - songwriter and producer Zoe Mead, multi-instrumentalist Mariin Kallikorm and Jack Gooderham on drums - are going to release their new EP \'Hitchhiker\' on the 29th September. Self-produced by Mead, Hitchhiker shows the band at their synth-pop best: bouncing electronic rhythms work their way towards a typically assured pop chorus, while glossy, 80s inspired bass and washy layers of sweeping FX provide the bed for Meads emphatic vocal performance, all coming together to form one of their most kinetic, contagious outings to date. Of the track Mead explains : I recently became obsessed with a true story I read about a hobo hitchhiker. This dude had nothing material, but anyone who met him saw him as happiest person they\'d ever met. Hitchhiker is about the dream many of us have about \'escaping\' society and rejecting materialism in favour of living alone with nothing but nature, our own thoughts and air in our lungs. The art of being happy just to exist with your own mind as entertainment; what a power that would be. With influences ranging from Blonde Redhead to Warpaint and a wide-range of previous supporters spanning across 6Music and Radio 1s Huw Stephens to SPIN, The Telegraph and The Line Of Best Fit, Wyldest continue to build on the acclaim of debut EP Dark Matter with this exciting new release. Slim Cessna's Auto Club Live At The Borderline

DHP Family presents: Slim Cessna\'s Auto Club live at the Borderline. In September 2016, Slim Cessna\'s Auto Club is releasing its new album The Commandments According to SCAC. It has been twenty-four years since Slim Cessna parted ways with The Denver Gentlemen, that grand progenitor of the peculiar strain of Gothic Americana unique to the Mile High City, to form Slim Cessna\'s Auto Club with a group of talented peers. Many bands with a long and successful run like that would stick close to its roots. But rather than rest on well-earned laurels, the Auto Club challenged itself to break with well-worn modes of operating for the new record. Wallace Stenger may have captured the spirit of the west in his 1971 novel Angle of Repose. Jim Thompson surely exposed the lurid underbelly of the Western experience. Cormac McCarthy definitely evoked the conflicted, tortured spirit of small town life on the frontier. William Faulkner and Flannery O\'Connor informed all of them with a humor and soulfulness. It is that literary tradition that imbues the harrowing and celebratory sound and riveting stories of Slim Cessna\'s Auto Club. And for a full twenty years it was largely in that realm of art that the Auto Club reveled and garnered a loyal cult following well beyond the boundaries of The Queen City of the Plains. But no band can be satisfied with treading the same territory that it helped to define forever. The Commandments According to SCAC, will be the first full length album of original material released on the Auto Club\'s own imprint, SCACUNINCORPORATED. The title evokes the themes of cosmic punishment and redemption that have served the band\'s songwriting engine so well in the past. But this set of songs sounds more hopeful and expansive, a quality that was always there but this time out the brighter sides of the songwriting are emphasized. Hints of this saw early full-flown expression on 2008\'s Cipher and Unentitled from 2011. With The Commandments, however, the Auto Club seems to step forward into the promise of its own possibilities. It remains capable of the heady darkness and celebratory intensity with which it made its name. Now that charmingly dusky and spare sound breathes with a color and delicacy of feeling that perhaps sat in the background in times past. Maybe it\'s partly due to the greater creative contributions from longtime collaborator Rebecca Vera and The Peeler or the inclusion of upright bass player Ian O\' Dougherty. But the core of the band\'s songwriting and sound is anchored firmly in the vision of Slim, Munly Munly and Lord Dwight Pentacost. Whatever the true source of this transformation, The Commandments According to SCAC sounds like a band marshalling its creative inspiration to mark out a new chapter of its existence. When you get to see the Auto Club tour following the album\'s release, you\'ll get to see an already mighty band reinvigorated by this new spirit as well as by the fire that has long burned in its collective belly.
