Brodsky Quartet

Shostakovich String Quartet No 7 Beethoven String Quartet No 16 in F Op 135 Borodin String Quartet No 2 The Brodskys are no strangers to powerful, dramatic programmes, as witnessed by this seasons curtain opener. Two highly personal quartets bookend the concert, each one dedicated to the wife of the composer. Shostakovichs is a tortured affair that captures with near unbearable intensity the loss of his first wife. It yields to an altogether sunnier quartet by Borodin that envelops an utterly ravishing Nocturne. Between them sits Beethovens last complete piece of music, written just months before his death. It is the final work in the greatest cycle of string quartets in history and the tension is palpable as its enigmatic theme Must it be? It must be! resounds across the hall. brodskyquartet.co.uk

Aurora Orchestra - Vienna, City Of Dreams

Sarah Connolly mezzo-soprano Andrew Staples tenor John Reid piano Nicholas Collon conductor Mozart Piano Concerto No 11 in F K413 (version for piano and string quartet) Mahler Piano Quartet in A minor Mahler (arr. Farrington) Das Lied von der Erde Aurora fits St Georges like a glove: a young, dynamic orchestra that plays with spirit and passion, delivering thrilling and imaginative programmes. For this concert Aurora turns its gaze to Vienna, the creative capital that was home to the greatest classical composers of all time. The players trace a path from one of Mozarts earliest piano concertos, bright and virtuosic, to a late masterpiece by Mahler, Das Lied von der Erde. This epic song cycle is performed with two world-class soloists in an exquisite arrangement that distils the symphonic scoring to an intimate 16-player version. The result is a jewel-like reduction in which the individual instrumental and vocal lines sing out with radiance and utter clarity. Fiery music-making full of zest and joy THE OBSERVER

Big Mac's Wholly Soul Band

Big Mac’s were formed in 1990 as the house band for the legendary Hollywood Club in Newport. Within months of their formation The Commitments film was released and the band, being of a similar size and specializing too in 60’s Soul music, were inundated with work, constantly playing in every club, pub and eat house in South Wales.    In a short time they were supporting The Commitments at a number of venues and were soon welcoming offers of work that took them to holiday camps, five star hotels and nightclubs both in the U.K. and abroad.   The line up is that of tenor sax, trumpet and trombone, bass, drums, guitar, keyboards, two dynamic female vocalists and charismatic frontman Mike ‘Big Mac’ McNamara. Mike is a Soul singer in the purest sense of the word, thus the band, though more than adept at producing the raw edged originals of Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave, Otis Redding and James Brown, are also proficient in the more polished spheres of black music, Motown, Philly, Funk and those glorious vocal harmony drenched ballads. Vocalists, however, are only as good as their backing band permits and Big Mac has The Wholly Soul Band… easily the best in the business.   The Band has played Cairo, Tenerife, Vienna, Germany and Dublin as well as settings here in the U.K. as diverse as The Café Royal and The Marquee Club. Such far reaching appeal is witness to the band’s adaptability and versatility.   To date Big Mac’s have appeared on the bill with a vast number of top names, from Edwin Starr, Jimmy James and The Vagabonds, Van Morrison, The Pasadenas and Jools Holland to Go West, Dodgy and Shed7. Appearances on t/v and radio shows, touring, playing, rehearsing and performing have all served to polish the bands act, repetoire and musicianship without ever diminishing its energy and enthusiasm.         ‘I have to say if I was having a party I would be getting hold of Big Mac’s Wholly Soul Band…makes you wanna dance, sing and ding a ling!’James Whale

Originally scored by Philip Glass, Koyaanisqatsi is a remarkable cinematic masterpiece and a firm favourite of the bands for its powerful fusion of music and image. In 2015, GoGo Penguin wrote and performed their new score for the film as part of the opening season of Home a new centre for international contemporary art, theatre and film in Manchester. The audience response was overwhelming and the band has chosen to revisit the project in 2017. GoGo Penguins richly emotional music offers a perfect contemporary dialogue with Reggios profound images. Black Uhuru (1977 - 1985) With Mykal Rose

Black Uhuru (1977-1985) live in concert with Mykal Rose Supported by Tuseday 17th October 2017 Doors 7pm till 11pm Tickets available here: And Resident Records: http://www.resident-music.com/tickets The story and songs of BLACK UHURU (1977-1985) with MYKAL ROSE One of Jamaica\'s most distinguished singers, as a member of Black Uhuru Mykal Rose was one of the foundation stones of the roots movement, before launching a successful career in the modern dancehalls. His work with Uhuru helped bring the group a Grammy, while his distinctive vocals launched an entire musical style - the Waterhouse sound. The Kingston neighbourhood of Waterhouse is where Rose was born, on July 11, 1957. In 1972 he joined up with childhood friend Sly Dunbar. He had a series of solo singles for various producers like Niney the Observer and Lee Perry before being bought to producer Prince Jammy. Jammy then introduced Rose to Ducky Simpson, who was trying to reconstitute his vocal trio Uhuru. With the enlistment of former Jayes frontman Errol Nelson, Black Uhuru was born. The trio recorded their 1977 debut album Love Crisis for Jammy, which was later remixed and given an international release as Black Sounds of Freedom. Nelson quit the band soon after and Puma was brought in. Black Uhuru was now complete. With their subsequent albums overseen by Sly Dunbar and his partner Robbie Shakespeare, and accompanied by the pair\'s band. the Revolutionaries, Black Uhuru led the roots movement into the international arena. Across a glittering career of classic singles and masterful albums Guess Whos Coming To Dinner, Red, Sensimilla, Chill Out, Tear it Up Live, the trio reached a new pinnacle of success in 1985 when Anthem won the first ever Grammy in the newly instituted Reggae category.

From Russia With Love

Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra Programme: Khachaturian Adagio from Spartacus Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor Stravinsky Petrushka Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra Michael Bell Conductor Martin James Bartlett - Piano The centre-piece of this concert is the most beloved of all concertos, Rachmaninovs Piano Concerto No. 2, a work that is equally associated with Russian romance as it is with steam trains and the classic British film Brief Encounter. Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra is thrilled to welcome the 2014 BBC Young Musician of the Year, Martin James Bartlett as soloist. Violinist Nicola Benedetti has spoken of Martin as a natural and powerful musician, he lives and breathes music. Stravinskys ballet Petrushka is set at a Russian shrovetide fair, and its his most colourful work. All is well until three puppets are brought to life The concert opens with more ballet music, the sumptuous Adagio from Khachaturians Spartacus. If Rachmaninovs Piano Concerto No. 2 conjures images of steam trains then the Adagio from Spartacus owes its immense popularity to the great sailing ships of TVs The Onedin Line. http://r17.wales/whats-on/music/1161/ Tickets: 6.50 | 9.50 | 11.50 | 17.50 | 23.50 Concessions available - please see website for more info 16 - 22 years olds: 8.50 Plus an optional 1 postage fee.
