MALE GAZE (Castle Face) Free Show

Acid Box Promotions welcome back Male Gaze to Brighton! We hosted a free show back in April 2016 at SMFB and now we host yet another FREE show in the intimate confines of the The Hope & Ruin downstairs bar area on Sunday 24th September. Matt Jones is the frontman of Male Gaze as well as the co-founder of Castle Face Records with non other than John Dwyer of Thee Oh Sees. Castle Face Records host their own stage at Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia 2017 that weekend and we\'re pleased to be bringing them back down to Brighton with us the day after. Henry Rollins - words on their latest LP "MISS TAKEN" "Matt, Mark and Adam, aka Male Gaze, return quickly from the brainy roar of their previous album King Leer with their six heels hanging even further over the edge of the abyss. Good bands often pull punches but the great ones dont and these charismatically scarred veterans of romance, gear singed from all too real firefights in the dark world of adulthood, lodge ten new slugs into your vest. Your life was spared but youll feel every second of the thirty five plus minutes, grateful that all you got was a bruising. Imagine what it did to them! Have you ever flung yourself out there to such a degree that you risked total humiliation if it all went south, to where the next step would be self deportation to some distant island of annihilation in your mind? How did that work out for you? Dont worry, Male Gaze knows and they wrote some songs about it. Look out your window, down at the glittering metropolis below and listen to this album." acidboxpromotions.co.uk facebook.com/acidboxpromotions/events

Their debut album, 2014\'s Big Guys (Lava Thief), righteously filled a kaleidoscopic void in instrumental music and along with 2016\'s follow up album, Liquid Of Choice (Bad Elephant Music), the band gained an infamous reputation for their awe-inspiring live shows across the European and UK art rock scene, including the La Ferme lectrique and ArcTanGent festivals. With a third album rapidly underway, THE BRACKISH are storming the stage again with a new brew of gracefully strange arrangements and improvised auditory theatre. https://youtu.be/3LfqFKTm4x0 LAPIS LAZULI is a multi-genre fusion band from Canterbury combining Funk, Progressive, Psychedelic, Fusion, Rock, Latin, Balkan and Afrobeat styles. The Black Angels - Trinity Centre - 27.09.17

THE BLACK ANGELS www.theblackangels.com The sultry neo-psychedelic sound of the Black Angels came together in spring 2004. Hailing from Austin, Texas, they initially comprised Stephanie Bailey (drums), Christian Bland (guitar), Alex Maas (vocals), Jennifer Raines (organ), and Nathan Ryan (bass), and took their name from a Velvet Underground classic, "The Black Angel\'s Death Song." The band\'s self-titled debut EP was released in late 2005. After a string of North American dates in winter 2006, they readied themselves for a performance at the annual South by Southwest Music Conference in March. Their first couple of full-length albums -- April 2006\'s Passover and April 2008\'s Directions to See a Ghost -- were both, in the main, recorded at Erik Wofford\'s Austin, Texas-based Cacophony Recorders, a studio also used by other local and notable indie rock acts such as White Denim and Voxtrot. By the time the second record was issued, Raines had been replaced by multi-instrumentalist Kyle Hunt and the Black Angels were beginning to create a name for themselves on the live circuit among fans of \'60s-inspired psych rock. In late 2008, they performed as the backing band for former 13th Floor Elevators frontman Roky Erickson on a series of dates across the West Coast of the U.S. Next, in 2010, they recorded a couple of collaborative tracks with Unkle, one of which -- "With You in My Head" -- appeared on the soundtrack to that summer\'s multi-million-grossing The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. This large-scale exposure led to their third album, September 2010\'s Phosphene Dream, becoming something of a breakthrough record when it hit the Top 50 of the Billboard chart immediately following its release. Its companion piece, the Phosgene Nightmare EP, arrived in 2011, and in 2012, following Ryan\'s departure, Rishi Dhir of Elephant Stone became an auxiliary bandmember, filling in on guitar and occasionally bolstering their live sound with sitar. Released in 2013, Indigo Meadow was produced and mixed by Grammy-nominated fellow Texan John Congleton, and that release was soon followed by its own companion EP, April 2014\'s Clear Lake Forest. Following a four-year gap, the band finally released its fifth long-player in 2017. Death Song was the Black Angels\' heaviest to date, having been recorded during the turbulent U.S. election process. Kirin J Callinan

Callinan’s debut solo album, 2013’s Embracism, was an idiosyncratic collection that revelled in alternately seducing and repelling the listener. Bravado ups the ante with a cover shot of the artist, shirtless and sporting his trademark mullet haircut, about to take a hearty load of (his own?) urine in the face. And it’s almost too perfect a metaphor for an album whose creator revels in keeping a straight face while emphatically taking the piss. - The Guardian

Striking Matches + Foreign Affairs At The Fleece, Bristol

Wed 27th Sept | 7.30pm | 16.50 adv | All Ages* Striking Matches www.strikingmatches.com With their T Bone Burnett-produced debut album, guitar-wielding duo Striking Matches creates an unexpected and unique sound that defies easy categorization. The music of Striking MatchesSarah Zimmermann and Justin Davisoccupies that sweet spot at the intersection of country, rock and blues, where all of the elements blend to form an authentically raw and rootsy sound that has a timeless and international appeal. Indeed, their songs including When the Right One Comes Along and Hanging on a Lie have been featured on ABCs hit drama series Nashville and recorded by the shows stars Sam Palladio and Clare Bowen, and attracted an international fan base. Their first performances in London produced sold-out shows and audiences with a deep knowledge of their lyrics, even before the release of their first full album. Their debut self-titled EP was named among iTunes Best of 2012 and received national attention from outlets such as NPR, the BBC and The Wall Street Journal. The Nashville TV show was definitely a big break for us, Sarah says. It was the first time we had any national or international attention. That opened the door to a lot of fans finding us here in the U.S., but even overseas when the show came out in the U.K., she says. Striking Matches is the debut artist on the newly revived label, I.R.S. Nashville, and has toured with Train, Vince Gill, Ashley Monroe and Hunter Hayes. Foreign Affairs www.facebook.com/foreignaffairsmusic Started by brothers Adam and Lawrence in 2012, the bands first summer saw them booked for Glastonbury Festival, by owner Michael Eavis, as well as performances at Iconic Bristol venues The Thekla The Louisiana and airplay via BBC Introducing. Since bursting onto the local scene, tours have taken them throughout the UK, playing with the likes of The Lone Bellow, Marika Hackman and Ren Harvieu, tours have also covered Belgium and Switzerland.
