Blue Hawaii At The Pickle Factory

Blue Hawaii 21/11/17 - The Pickle Factory, London. Tickets are on sale now - www.alttickets.com/blue-hawaii-tickets Blue Hawaii is the songwriting, production, and DJ project of Raphaelle Ra Standell and Alexander Agor Kerby. After some four years apart, the duo rekindled their creative flame in 2016 and begun writing music about an intimate relationship Ra was experiencing mostly over instant messaging, sparking ideas about the meaning of closeness in our highly connected world. Tenderness is a concept album which brings forth the challenges of handling relationships online. Maintaining closeness over distance, real vs. virtual tenderness and accountability are important themes in the album\'s progression. It unfolds like a play and each song being supported by shorter interlude pieces: skits, phone calls, acoustic demos, real life samples and quiet left-turns.

Monopoly Power Against Democratic Rights

With Simon Renton The final in a series of four classes on CAPITALISM, CRISIS AND IMPERIALISM. This course examines capitalist development over the past century and does so in order to provide an understanding of the economic and political nature of the political and economic crisis which began in 2008 and which continues today. The course draws on a number of explanations but principally those in the Marxist tradition. It does not assume any prior knowledge but it might be useful to read, if you have not done so already, Marxs Wages Price and Profit and Lenins Imperialism: the highest stage of Capitalism. The course will be run concurrently with the Librarys On-line course of the same name and its resources will be made available to those enrolled.

Steel Pan Fusion Plays Philip Glass

One of the most influential and important composers of the 20th century, Philip Glass is a pioneer of minimalist music alongside fellow luminaries Steve Reich and Terry Riley. With a body of work that stretches beyond contemporary classical music into film scores, operas and more, the source material is rich for reinterpretation. We have commissioned London based ensemble Steel Pan Fusion to perform a selection of works from Glass\' extensive repertoire, from his peerless Glassworks to the soundtrack for The Truman Show.

Conway Hall Book Club

As many readers know, Conway Hall has been home to the independent publisher, Istros Books, for the past 5 years. Next month, we shall be welcoming another publisher, as Peter Owen move into the Fox room on the 2nd floor. With two indy publishers and a wonderful library on our premises, we thought it a good time for a new literary initiative: a monthly book club for members and friends, where we discuss some of the titles produced by our resident publishers, as well as the occasional guest sessions hosted by staff and other residents. November 24th - A Peoples History of the Russian Revolution by Neil Faulkner ***With the Author*** The Russian Revolution may well be the most misunderstood event in modern history. In A Peoples History of the Russian Revolution, Neil Faulkner sets out to debunk the myths. In this fast-paced introduction to tumultuous events, the Russian people are the heroes. Faulkner shows how a mass movement of millions, organised in democratic assemblies, mobilised for militant action, destroyed a regime of landlords, profiteers, and warmongers. Faulkner rejects caricatures of Lenin and the Bolsheviks as authoritarian conspirators, democratic-centralists, or the progenitors of Stalinist dictatorship. He argues that the Russian Revolution was an explosion of democracy and creativity and that it was crushed by bloody counter-revolution and replaced with a monstrous form of bureaucratic state-capitalism. Laced with first-hand testimony, this history seeks to rescue the democratic essence of the revolution from its detractors and deniers, offering a perfect primer for the modern reader. We are committed to promoting inclusive practice at Conway Hall. Due to the constraints of our building, the Library is not currently accessible to wheelchair users or those with limited mobility, we are happy to discuss with you how we can make the contents and materials accessible to you. We carefully monitor which events are held in the Library, and will use your comments to enable us to develop ways to ensure that everyone should be able to attend events in the future.

From Out A Darker Sea: So Percussion

The Brooklyn-based contemporary percussion ensemble So Percussion present an audio-visual exploration of the social history of British coal mining, From Out a Darker Sea. The coal industry long formed the backbone of towns and cities across England. Entire communities sprang into existence as fervent mining activity fuelled the industrial revolution. Integrating art, photography, film and an original musical soundtrack performed live, So Percussion whose repertoire ranges across Cage, Xenakis and Steve Reich and have performed here as part of Bryce Dessner and Nico Muhlys marathon weekends capture the environment, personal stories, and aspirations of a community fighting against industrial decline. This project originally performed in County Durham was born out of a collaboration between the quartet and Amber Films, and is inspired by East Durhams reinvention after the crushing loss of its mining industry. Theyre embarking on a national tour of sacred spaces, many in former mining communities, which combines live performance with community education programmes to lend local and contemporary context to historical narratives.
