TOMs Film Club: Forbidden Planet (1956)

The first of our audience requested films is Forbidden Planet, a film which has long endured as one of the finest science fiction films of the 1950s, along with Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Day the Earth Stood Still, as well as a precursor for many cinematic space voyages to come. Directed by Fred M. Wilcox, the film follows Space Commander John J. Adams as he journeys to the largely unexplored planet Altair-4 in search of a previous expedition which went missing many decades prior. Upon arriving to this new and mysterious world, he encounters the brilliant but arrogant Dr. Morbius, his daughter Altaira, their versatile metallic servant Robby the Robot, but no other signs of life, with the reasons soon becoming clear. Loosely based on William Shakespeares The Tempest and starring Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis and a pre-Airplane! and Naked Gun Leslie Nielsen, Forbidden Planet boasts some superb monster effects (created by Disney animators), the first all electronic musical soundscape in film history, and overall an extraordinary scale unmatched by many films of its era, and still continues to impress and influence audiences to this day. For this fanciful interstellar planet, which has been dreamed up at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and put on the screen in Eastman color and properly spacious CinemaScope, is the gaudiest layout of gadgets this side of a Florida hotel. It offers some of the most amusing creatures conceived since the Keystone cops. Information on all of the artists and their collections can be found here: http://www.outspokenldn.com/outspokenpress/ UNRESERVED SEATING IN ROWS // 16+ ANTHONY ANAXAGOROU Anthony Anaxagorou is a British-born Cypriot award-winning poet, fiction writer, essayist, publisher and poetry educator. He has published nine volumes of poetry, a spoken-word EP and a collection of short stories. His poetry and fiction have appeared on BBC Newsnight, BBC Radio 4, ITV, Vice UK, Channel 4 and Sky Arts. He was commissioned by the Labour Party during the 2017 general election to write the poem for their campaign entitled Mark It Red. In 2015, his poetry and fiction writing won the Groucho Maverick Award and in 2016 he was shortlisted for the Hospital Clubs H-100 award for most influtential people in writing and publishing. Heterogeneous: Heterogeneous is the definitive anthology of Anthony Anaxagorous poetry - an extensive and revised selection taken from several previous volumes. The winner of the 2015 Groucho Maverick Award, Anaxagorou offers the reader an insight into his poetry career with work spanning from 2009 to 2016. JOELLE TAYLOR Joelle Taylor is an award winning spoken word artist, poet, playwright and author. She has performed across the UK as well as internationally for the British Council (Zimbabwe, Brazil, Botswana) taking in a diverse range of venues from the 100 Club, the 02 Arena, the Royal Festival Hall and Ronnie Scotts to the Royal Court, the Globe, the ICA, Buckingham Palace and various prisons including Pentonville and Holloway. She was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Society Arts in 2015 as well as being named as one of Southbank Centres Nelson Mandela Change Makers for positively affecting cultural Britain. Songs My Enemy Taught Me: \'Songs My Enemy Taught Me\' is a collection of poems themed around the experiences of women globally, but it had simple beginnings. It began with me. It began with a small child in a hotel room not wanting to speak. It began with opera, but the kind that cannot be heard. It began at the point at which I ended. This is a book about colonisation and terrorism, about invasion and ownership. It is a survival manual, a map, a photograph, a song. It is internet at 2am. It is the way your mother just looked at you. It is the way the girl in front of you on the soft journey home just reached for her keys. It is your hand reaching for keys.\' RAYMOND ANTROBUS Raymond Antrobus is a British-Jamaican poet, performer, editor and educator, born and bred in East London, Hackney. He is one of the world\'s first recipients of an MA in Spoken Word education from Goldsmiths University. In 2017 he was awarded 1 of 3 inaugural Jerwood Compton Poetry Fellowships. To Sweeten Bitter: Consider the name of Raymond Antrobus extraordinary collection of poems for a moment: To Sweeten Bitter. Its a phrase of infinite possibility and tender worry, open and searching, wanting and volatile. And in this sense, it serves as a kind of secret refrain for us, a haunted current that charges after each line and image, each heart-fraught question (you think youre going / to go free?) and tentative hope (there is always enough time / in our lives to see / what we must see). Here, a father laughs you cannot love sugar and hate your sweetness and a son reckons with all that might mean in the scratched light of history and the turning / and the losing of myself. Derek Walcott once reflected that. I have never separated the writing of poetry from prayer; these poems in all their urgent beautyaffirm that faith, embody it. - R.A. Villanueva BRIDGET MINAMORE Bridget Minamore is a poet, writer and journalist from south-east London. She has worked with the National Theatre and the Royal Opera House, and read her poems at places including the Roundhouse, Latitude Festival, the Bristol Old Vic and the Southbank Centre. In 2011 she represented the UK at the International Biennale in Rome with Point Blank Poets, and in 2013 was shortlisted to be Londons first Young Poet Laureate. Bridget was chosen as one of The Hospital Clubs Emerging Creatives in 2015, and more recently, as one of Speaking Volumes 40 Stars of Black British Literature. She runs writing workshops around the country, and is currently working on a BBC R4 documentary on the history of women\'s revolutionary poetry. Her first pamphlet Titanic (Out-Spoken Press) came out in May 2016. Titanic: In this debut pamphlet, acclaimed poet Bridget Minamore explores the sensibilities surrounding love, loss, and the subsequent struggles we all face at some point in our relationships. Themed around a series of popular songs and a certain sinking ship, Minamore riffs from poem to poem with a choice selection of humorous and somber verse. FRAN LOCK Fran Lock is a sometime itinerant dog whisperer and author of three poetry collections, \'Flatrock\' (Little Episodes, 2011), \'The Mystic and the Pig Thief\' (Salt, 2014), and \'Dogtooth\' (Out Spoken Press, 2017), as well as \'Laudanum Chapbook Anthology: Volume Two\' (Laudanum, 2017) with Abigail Parry and Kim Campanello. Her work has appeared in various places, most recently The Morning Star, POETRY, Poetry Review, and in Best British Poetry 2015. Dogtooth: Dogtooth is a book about ghosts. Not in the undead sense, but more as in the spectres and echoes of absent friends. It looks at the discomforts, paranoias and phobias that haunt a very particular cultural moment. Its a book about fear, about a background static of suspicion. Its about the twin anxieties of identity and assimilation, the folklore we carry and are carried by. The stories we tell ourselves about ourselves, and the damage those stories do. HIBAQ OSMAN Hibaq Osman is a Somali writer born and based in London. Her work centres largely around women, identity and the healing process. Often taken from real life experiences, Hibaq\'s writing focuses on the hidden aspects of lives and how we can bring the unspoken to the forefront of our minds and mouths. Hibaq Osman works towards a future where funding and access to the arts for people of colour is considered the norm and not an exception. A Silence You Can Carry A Silence You Can Carry stands as a searing debut collection from a startlingly brave new talent. The delicate and almost effortless poetry of Hibaq Osman blends everyday objects and movements into monumental invocations. The collection is filled with beautifully woven observations that are centered on love and loss, family relationships, identity and womanhood. Hibaq Osman holds our eyes on the page as tightly as the ears she has captivated on stage. A beautiful, heart-rending debut full of love, despair and courage Sabrina Mahfouz

Kane Strang

We\'re delighted to host Kane Strang in Brighton, his new LP \'Two Hearts and No Brain\' is probably our favourite LP of the year so far! A winning blend of careful precision and mercurial abandon, Kane Strang\'s songs are constantly surprising. With a penchant for melodic earworms to rival those of the world\'s best pop songwriters, the New Zealand artist\'s glittering hooks twist and turn in perfect synch with meticulous band arrangements. Hints of 60s pop (NB: Zombies, Stooges) and 90s alt-rock shine through; but there\'s a contemporary crunch, sheen and bald lyrical tone to Strang\'s sound that places him firmly in the here and now. Hailed as "the next Stephen Malkmus", by The Revue. Strang\'s on the brink of becoming indie-rock\'s intelligent poster boy "The young man is that talented." https://www.kanestrang.com/ Plus support Upcoming Love Thy Neighbour shows: 14092017 - GAPS. Bonobo

* This is a Live show Bonobo will be seeing out 2017 with a huge one-off LIVE show at the Brighton Centre, his biggest show to date in the city and his final UK headline performance of 2017. From his humble beginnings as an eclectic DJ in Brighton to becoming one of the worlds biggest electronic acts, Bonobo has been creating music for more than a decade and a half. 2017 saw the release of the UK top ten album Migration, Bonobos sixth studio album. Bonobos rise has been stealthy but unstoppable, and Si Green, the man behind it all, is now one of the biggest electronic artists of our time. As a DJ and with the Bonobo live band, hes now played to millions of people across the world in shows and festivals, and each album has been bigger than the last with 2017s Migration hitting the top ten in the UK, Netherlands and Belgium and getting untold press coverage everywhere. During this rise, he also achieved the rare feat for a British dance artist of breaking America and not with the kind of high-octane shock-tactic rave beats and audiovisual spectaculars that characterised the EDM explosion, but with subtle, emotional, ambiguous and musicianly work that demands long and deep immersion. >>Tickets on sale 7th July, Check the event for details!

Widowspeak

Widowspeak remain purveyors of mood. Whether painting an image of a basement apartment with blinds closed or conjuring the sweeping openness of a desert, theyre an outfit ever preoccupied with the influence of place and the passage of time on personal experience: the way vivid memories can feel like movies or dreams. In the past Ive felt compelled to write songs that are more optimistic than Im actually feeling, as if I could make it true, as if everything in the past was significant or beautiful in a way, even if it was painful. But the truth is that not everything makes sense, and not every day of your life is an experience of clear cut emotional clarity, says Hamilton. I struggle with this compulsion to pull away from people, pull away from the things I enjoy doing, and sometimes literally picking up and moving away when I am feeling uneasy and anxious about my future in a given space, physical or mental. Social media these days can exacerbate that as well.

Weaves

Its been almost exactly a year since Weaves released their acclaimed debut LP. The self-titled album was among the most anticipated of the year, and was lauded internationally upon its release for its exuberant approach to guitar pop, which was described as one of the most unpredictable sounds of 2016 (MTV), and a triumphant assault on all things conventional (i-D). It was a whirlwind year for the band who spent a nearly uninterrupted 12 months on the road, playing festivals across the globe, and touring with their fellow 2016 breakout artists Sunflower Bean and Mitski. Propelled forward by their own momentum, which they corralled like the barely contained energy of their explosive live sets, it was a transformative experience, and upon returning home to Toronto the bands leaders, singer Jasmyn Burke and guitarist Morgan Waters, found themselves possessed by an irrepressible burst of creative energy. Weaves entered the studio in early 2017 to begin recording what would become their sophomore LP, Wide Open (due out October 6th, 2017 on Buzz, Kanine & Memphis Industries). Assisted by engineer Leon Taheny (Austra, Fucked Up) who worked with them on their first LP, they approached the album as a highwire act - walking the line between intention and their own gleefully anarchic creative impulses. https://www.weavesband.com/ Plus support Upcoming Love Thy Neighbour shows: 02082017 - Soccer Mommy. Dub Pistols 'Crazy Diamonds' (LIVE)

Dictionary Pudding proudly present... Dub Pistols Theyre back! Although theyve never really been away. Barry Ashworths evergreen bunch of dubwise vagabonds have been rocking practically every festival in existence all summer, and yet have still found time to squeeze out a new album As they gear up to celebrate 20 years of riotous marauding, the Dub Pistols are prepping their seventh album Crazy Diamonds in 2017 and therell be a documentary about the band dropping at some point in the year, too. And theyll be out on the road, as usual, of course the hardest working band in showbiz. The Dubs have been dubbed The Pistoleros in recent times by their army of fans so it seemed only natural to adopt the tag for their latest album on Rob Da Banks Sunday Best imprint. El Pistolero is also the nickname of Uruguay talisman Luiz Suarez, who knocked England out of the 2014 World Cup. But as Barry is a Liverpool fan, hes happy to still have this association. Just. The Dub Pistols coalesced in the mid-90s and initially surfed the big beat wave along with acts like the Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim. They had some minor chart hits like Cyclone and Theres Gonna Be A Riot on Concrete Records, remixed the likes of Moby and Limp Bizkit, and made dramatic inroads into America. Their debut album in 1998, Point Blank, cemented their position as party-rockers extraordinaire, and by the time it came to their second album around the Millennium Six Million Ways To Live, with guest vocals by reggae great Horace Andy and lead singer of The Specials, Terry Hall they were more concerned with some of the worlds problems. plus very special guests, Kioko Concorde 2, BRIGHTON / THURS 23 NOV 2017 730-11pm / 14 13 adv from ---> http://bit.ly/2uI8wbG and from all good online ticket retailers, and in person at Resident Brighton Presented by Dictionary Pudding Promotions MAILING LIST SIGNUP: http://eepurl.com/b6ROBD www.dictionarypudding.co.uk

The Magic Band (Capt Beefheart's) Brighton 23.11.17 Selling FAST

Dictionary Pudding present, on their final ever lap of the UK, the dropout boogiemen themselves... THE MAGIC BAND Former Captain Beefheart musical director and drummer, John Drumbo French leads out the latest version of The Magic Band for the final tour of the UK. A faithful rendition of the best of Captain Beefheart & The Magic Bands music is guaranteed. John French was nicknamed Drumbo by Don Van Vliet, aka Captain Beefheart. British Underground commentator and DJ John Peel described Beefheart as the most important figure to emerge from the Rock era of the 1960s and 1970s. Rolling Stone magazine included John French in their 100 Best Drummers Ever (at #48) and declared: (his) toms-heavy, polyrhythmic style would become as integral to the group as Don Van Vliets modernist-blues croak. Don Van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart was a visionary in the field of music. His group, Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band started as a Blues group. Later, drummer John French joined and they recorded an album for Buddah Records entitled Safe as Milk referring to the strontium-90 content found in lactating mothers milk. Guitarist Jeff Cotton joined and a second album, Strictly Personal was recorded shortly before a tour of the United Kingdom where famed DJ John Peel had been playing Safe as Milk to a very interested audience. Van Vliet hated Strictly Personals production, rapt with phase-shifting, calling it Psychedelic Bromo Seltzer. Though for the most part commercially unsuccessful, the groundbreaking album, Trout Mask Replica was hailed by critics who recognised Van Vliets unique and totally original approach to music composition and lyric creation. Produced by Frank Zappa, who gave the musicians six hours to record the bulk of a double album in a single evening, was amazed when The Magic Band recorded it in four-and-a-half. Rumours create legends, and there are many rumours circulating, some exaggeration was thrown in for spice (I wrote the album in 8 hours claimed Van Vliet). The truth was even stranger: the band all shared a two-bedroom bungalow with Van Vliet in Woodland Hills for nine months while the album was created bit by bit, transcribed in piano notation by John Drumbo French, and taught to the others by the same during gruelling 18-hour days of rehearsal, often interrupted by sessions of Van Vliets own form of group therapy, which turned into what some consider brainwashing sessions. It was a very intense and creative time as all the players learned to transpose piano parts to guitar, as well as having had their complete identities investigated on an all-too-personal level. KEVIN MORBY - The HAUNT, Brighton - 24th November 2017

Exclusive Resident Brighton pre-sale Tuesday 20th June 12pm. Only in person in store or via 01273 606312. One Inch Badge presents: KEVIN MORBY + support The Haunt, Brighon Friday 24th November 2017 Returning to Brighton after a storming sell-out for One Inch Badge at the Hope and Ruin in 2016, Kevin Morby is coming to the Haunt on 24th November 2017 with new acclaimed album City Music in tow, current Resident Music album of the week. Full of listless wanderlust, \'City Music\' is a collection inspired by and devoted to the metropolitan experience across America and beyond by a songwriter cast from his own mould. As he puts it: "It is a mix-tape, a fever dream, a love letter dedicated to those cities that I cannot get rid of, to those cities that are all inside of me." His fourth album, City Music works as a counterpart to Morbys acclaimed 2016 release Singing Saw, an autobiographical set that reflected the solitude and landscape in which it was recorded. It was imagined as "an old bookshelf with a young Bob and Joni staring back at me, blank and timeless. They live here, in this left side of my brain, smoking cigarettes and playing acoustic guitars while lying on an unmade bed." And now follows City Music, the yang to its yin, the heads to its tails. It is an collection crafted using the other side of its creators brain, the jumping off point perhaps best once again encapsulated by an image. "Here, Lou Reed and Patti Smith stare out at the listener," explains Morby. "Stretched out on a living room floor they are somewhere in mid-70s Manhattan, also smoking cigarettes." It finds Morby exploring similar themes of solitude, but this time framed by a window of an uptown apartment that looks down upon an international urban landscape "exposed like a giant bleeding wound.
