SATORI

Josephine Davies (Saxes), Dave Whitford (Bass), Paul Clarvis (Drums & Percussion) Satori is a brand new trio from Perrier Award winning saxophonist Josephine Davies, featuring drummer Paul Clarvis and bassist Dave Whitford. The chord-less line-up features open and playful compositions with plenty of space for improvisation. Influenced by the great live trio recordings of Joe Henderson and Julian Arguelles, ‘Satori’ were inspired to create a similar feeling of freedom and exploration whilst also bringing a fresh and unique sound through original compositions. Their debut album was released earlier this year on Whirlwind Recordings to rave reviews:  “consistently inventive” (Jazzwise)…  “..Spiritual, spiralling…slow-burning exuberance” (UK Vibe) Those who were at the Bristol Jazz Fest’ this year, will recall the beautifully rounded tenor sounds that Josephine showed, performing with the engaging Alec Dankworth’s ‘Spanish Accents’ band. Since leaving the Guildhall School of Music (following two years with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra), Josephine is already showing she has a tone and an original voice on the saxophone, getting work with the likes of The London Jazz Orchestra; Ronnie Scott's Vanguard Band (led by Gerard Presencer), Jamie Cullum and the BBC Big Band “A truly gifted and imaginative saxophonist, Davies undoubtedly possesses the art of the improviser and has produced an album of exuberant lyricism and consistently engaging tunes” (‘All About Jazz’) Paul Clarvis is well known to Bristol audiences as he was a part of Andy Sheppard’s bands “Learning to Wave” (’98) and “Dancing Man & Woman” (2000). More recently Paul was involved in the 2012 London Olympic Games Opening Ceremony produced by film director Danny Boyle. He not only wrote Dame Evelyn Glennie’s part, but was Drum Sargent helping Rick Smith train the 100 drummers who took part in the event. He is a prodigiously gifted drummer & percussionist, equally at home in Jazz, Folk, Rock, World and Classical music and in any size group. His sense of time and beautifully poised touch, enables him to be intensely musical and therefore much in demand. He has also appeared on the soundtracks of literally hundreds of films from all the Harry Potter movies to Star Wars, the Lord of the Rings series and the Bond film, Skyfall.   It was the inclusion of Paul in this line-up that made me love the sound of Josephine’s trio, his work with Dave Whitford behind her luscious toned imaginative playing meant it this was a no-brainer to book them for the autumn programme. It is an improvisatory trio project reflecting the definition of its Buddhist title Satori – ‘a moment of enlightening presence and inner spaciousness away from the clutter of thought’ Take a listen to the video tracks on the gig page for a sample of what to expect. I think this will be an evening of great beauty with tunes to make you think and smile.

Celine And Julie Go Boating (35mm)

(Cline et Julie vont en bateau) Jacques Rivette, 1974, 193 min, 35mm, In French with English subtitles, Cert: 12A - Sun 24 September // 17:00 Tickets: 5 (full) / 4 (concession) Rivettes rarely seen yet biggest commercial hit, is an exhilarating combination of the themes of theatricality, paranoia and la vie Parisienne, all wrapped up in an extended and entrancing examination of the nature of filmmaking, and film-watching. Celine, a magician, and Julie, a librarian, meet in Montmartre and wind up sharing the same flat, bed, fianc, clothes, identity and imagination. Soon, thanks to a magic sweet, they find themselves spectators, then participants, in a Henry James-inspired film-within-the film, a melodrama unfolding in a mysterious suburban house with the Phantom Ladies Over Paris, a sinister man and his child. The atmosphere, however, is more Lewis Carroll, with Juliet Berto and Dominique Labourier as twin Alices. The four main actresses improvised their own dialogue in collaboration with Rivette and scriptwriter Eduardo de Gregorio. Acknowledged by director Susan Seidelman as a huge influence on her own hit film Desperately Seeking Susan (1985), Celine and Julie Go Boating was Rivettes greatest commercial and critical success its freewheeling, playful spirit still capturing the imagination of new audiences today.

SongSmith @Mr Wolf's Ft Sophie Hosken-Taylor / Purple Shoes / Ma

Sophie Hosken - Taylor is a singer songwriter hailing from the South West of England. Sophie has recorded and co-produced two mini-album, as well as having been featured across various radio stations and podcasts including BBC Bristol & Somerset. She\'s supported the likes of Matt "Urby Whale" Owens (Noah & The Whale) and Dive In, whilst also garnering minor support from Oh Wonder\'s Josephine. Having been described as "a superstar in the making" by Rife Magazine (Bristol), Sophie was also recently awarded Bath Festival\'s Young Performer Award 2015 as well as being named one of Bristol\'s Most Influential Bristolians Under 24." With a soothing delicate vocal tone accompanied with a prolific rich blend of acoustic guitar, Sophies folk pop hooks will match any mood. Tonight Sophie launches her new EP Matt Reynolds Music a singer-songwriter from Bristol in the UK; a purveyor of sunny yet soulful melodic acoustic-based pop. A veteran of England\'s South West music scene; Matt cut his teeth in several bands over a 12 year period playing everything from pop rock to metal and all that comes in-between. After a hiatus of several years involving a lot of soul-searching; Matt made a decision - now is the time to stake a definitive claim in the music industry and make his goals a reality. Matt has been described as \'the English Jason Mraz\' but his influences are wide and far reaching; ranging from acoustic luminaries such as James Taylor and Neil Young, contemporary solo artists like Gavin DeGraw and Paulo Nutini, country rock bands Counting Crows and Zack Brown Band through to the pillars of the grunge and alternative rock scene Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots and Soundgarden. Matt also writes a brutally honest blog detailing his struggles in music called The Making Of A Musician - sometimes funny, sometimes painful, always inspiring. His goal with this is to lay bare all the ups and downs of being an independent musician and provide insight and hope to young aspiring musicians everywhere. If you would like to delve deeper into Matt\'s world, you can read everything at www.themakingofamusician.wordpress.com. Not only is Matt pursuing his music with an unbridled passion; he is also on a path to attain peak physical conditioning through fitness and nutrition after years of being unhappy in his own skin. He doesn\'t see this as a separate goal from the music; instead choosing to take a holistic approach to his life and career goals. His ultimate hope is to inspire others who might be in a similar boat. Matt has just finished recording his debut solo EP \'Dancing By The Side Of The Road\' which is to be released soon. He is currently booking gigs in support of its release. The Purple Shoes: Quirky and Upbeat Country/Rock Americana Duo for the South Coast.
